I spent the last week (Aug 7-14) in Newfoundland, Canada. We stayed with non-biological family in Point May, on the Burin peninsula, for the first 5 days, then spent the last 3 days in St John’s, checking out places like Signal Hill, the harbour, Quidi Vidi Village, and doing the touristy thing, checking out all the shops on Water Street.<\/p>\n

We were lucky to have excellent (and uncommon) sunny\/cloudy weather, didn’t get much fog, and didn’t see any moose. This province has the best driving roads I’ve ever seen, long and winding, with excellently steep drops. The wide open space and relaxed environment also makes this one of the most peaceful places I’ve been.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Little villages found in coves all around.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Old family graves, some dating back to the end of the 19th century (1880s).<\/p>\n

One tombstone had a note asking if anyone who could read the
\nwriting on the stone could call a certain number. Unfortunately,
\nmy camera’s batteries had died at that point, and
\nI was unable to get a photo of this.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Despite having excellent driving roads, there
\nare lots of other roads that will not be paved
\nbecause of low traffic and low populations.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>The entrance to a cove. All the little islands act as
\nbarriers, keeping rough waves out of the harbour.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Lots of rock can be found around the coastlines.<\/p>\n

\nthere was one around to take a picture with…<\/p>\n

I didn’t take that many pictures. I treated this trip as a vacation. I didn’t touch a computer until I got to St John’s. My phone, though it had service, remained turned off and in my bag. I took the time to enjoy it out there, and I sure did enjoy it. The local take-out places pretty much all specialize in fried chicken, however I did make sure to try sometime different every meal. Fresh fish and chips, squid, scallops, custard cones (best thing in the world, bar none), wedge fries with dressing and gravy… Don’t take my word for it: try it yourself!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
